What we will draw

Hey everyone! Today we will be going over step-by-step how to draw a bow and arrow. So we will be using procreate as usual but the same steps apply with a good ol’ fashioned pen and pencil. 🙂

How to draw a bow and arrow

Step 1

First we’re going to start with a nice easy bow shape, done lightly as the first part of our underdrawing. Make sure to include a little swoop on either end.

Step 2

Now make another similar shape right beside the first one, thicker in the centre and tapering on both sides. include the little swoop as well to create the basic shape of our bow.

Step 3

Now round off the ends of the bow underdrawing to complete the bow shape.

Step 3

Step 4

Next, we need to move onto the part of the bow where the arrow rests. We want to draw a candy wrapper shape at the centre of the bow.

Step 4

Step 5

One each end of the bow, draw small lines, this will eventually be where the string wraps on each end of the bow.

Step 5

Step 6

Further define the shapes at each end of the bow.

Step 6

Step 7

Now from each end of the bow, draw a straight line that intersects at the middle of the bow.

Step 7

Step 8

Next we are starting the arrow with a narrow “V” in front of the bow.

Step 8

Step 9

Finish the arrow tip with a small lines.

Step 9

Step 10

Now we can draw the shaft of the arrow.

Step 10

Step 11

The feathers are next! First a few lines to mark the placement of the feathers.

Step 11

Step 12

Now the outline of the shape of the feathers.

Step 12

Step 13

Ok our underdrawing is done, congrats! Now time to start darkening our lines.

Step 13

Step 14

Step 14

Step 15

Were going to add a few little detail lines here, to give the effect of bunched fabric.

Step 15

Step 16

Step 16

Step 17

Step 17

Step 18

Outline the wrapped string at each end of the bow. We are going for the appearance of a string wrapped many time so don’t go to crazy here.

Step 18

Step 19

Now we can thicken the actual bow string itself too.

Next, some highlights on the front side of the bow in a lighter brown.

Step 27

Step 28

The bunched cloth where the archer holds the bow can be coloured a grey-brown.

Step 28

Step 29

The bow string can be any colour you like, I chose a rich red.

Step 29

Step 30

Step 30

Step 31

The strings can get a lighter highlight on the same side as the bow highlight.

Step 31

Step 32

Add highlights to the cloth. Try to visualize where the light hits and shadow falls to give it a realistic look.
